Taking on a hard-hitting Deer Lodge team in the opening game of the Southern A District Tournament on Thursday, the Helena Reps were dealt a 16-2 loss at Belgrade’s Edward S. Medina Field.
Veteran-laden Deer Lodge (38-15) opened the scoring in the second inning with a pair of runs, but then broke it open in the fourth with another three. Another three runs in the fifth preceded a five-spot in the sixth and three more to finish it out in the seventh. All told, the victors piled up 13 hits in the win.
Helena scored once in the third and added a second run in the sixth, managing six hits off of starter Sheldon Danforth, who went the distance for the win. The Reps’ Tanner McMahon took the loss, pitching through the fourth inning.
Helena (38-15) got a pair of hits from Ray Moore Jr, including a double, and Carter Wald, and one each from Ryan Arntson, Talon Burchard and Andrew Rosston. Burchard’s shot was also a double.
Helena is still alive in the double-elimination contest, but will have to battle back through the losers bracket if it hopes to continue the season. The top two teams at the end of the weekend will advance to the state tournament.
