The Helena Reps finished 4-0 in pool play at the Mission Valley Mariners Firecracker Tournament in Polson, Mont. with a 4-2 seven inning victory over a feisty Glacier Twins B squad in Ronan.
Eamonn Byrne was outstanding on the mound, pitching a complete game for the victory. Byrne went the distance by giving up 2 runs on 10 hits, striking out 6 and walking 1. Byrne allowed 2 runs on 6 hits in the first inning, but settled in to only give up 4 hits scattered over the final 6 innings.
The turning point of the game occurred in the bottom of the fifth inning with the Reps trailing 2-1. Talon Burchard stood on second and Ray Moore on first when Colin Sassano stepped to the plate with 2 outs. Sassano drilled the first pitch to deep center scoring Burchard. Moore was sent home and at the subsequent play at the plate, Twins catcher Tyler Murphy held out his elbow and lowered his shoulder, sending Moore careening off his feet and causing him to scramble back to touch home. Murphy was ejected from the game, the Reps took the lead at 3-2 and never looked back.
The win moves Helena to 28-10 on the year. The Reps next play the winner of the 7:00 p.m. game between the Mission Valley Mariners A and the Livingston Braves in the Firecracker championship game at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
