Koby Griffin pitched a complete-game victory and Payton Pappas posted three RBIs as the Helena Senators overpowered Bozeman 7-2 to stay alive at the Montana/Alberta AA State Legion baseball tournament in Missoula on Thursday.
After the Sens dropped their opening game to Kalispell on Wednesday, Griffin twirled a six-hitter against the Bucks in the elimination-game win, striking out two batsmen and walking four. DJ Perdaems took the loss.
Bozeman led 1-0 heading into the fourth inning before Helena pushed a cross a run to knot the score and then erupted for five tallies in the fifth frame to go up 6-1.
Pappas, Danny Burton (two RBIs) and Colin Sassano (three runs) rapped two hits apiece for the Capital City crew. Kienan Stief stroked a double for the Senators, while teammate Jackson Thennis laced a triple. The Bucks’ Jake Murfitt went 3 for 4.
“We’re alive for another day; (we) really bounced back with a good, all-around performance,” said coach Dave Thennis, whose No. 4 Senators improve to 36-24 on the year. “Koby pitched one of those game for the memory book today. What a great effort.”
Next, Helena will face No. 3 Lethbridge on Friday in an elimination contest at Lindborg-Gregg Field at 1 p.m.
