Helena Senators sweep Lakers

By Curt Synness, Helena IR

Highlighted by a two-out, seventh-inning rally in the opener, the Helena Senators swept a Class AA Legion baseball doubleheader in Kalispell on Saturday, beating the Lakers 7-6 and 7-1.

With two down and nobody on, and trailing Kalispell 6-4 in the top of the seventh in the first game, Helena’s Andrew Rosston worked a walk. Then Peyton Pappas stroked a single and twin brother Carter Pappas walked to load the bases.

Tanner McMahon followed with a walk and Eamonn Byrne was hit by a pitch to knot the score at 6-all. Next, Ryan Arntson’s drive to right field was misplayed, as Carter raced home with what turned out to be the deciding run.

Reliever Brett Jacobs saved the victory in the bottom half of the inning, setting the Lakers down in order, two by way of strikeout.

Arntson and Ray Moore Jr., who belted two doubles and posted a couple of RBIs, led the offense with two hits apiece.

Helena pitcher Tayler Carlson started and worked five innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits, with fanning six and walking two. He was relieved by Jackson Maynard, who collected the win with one inning of hitless ball.

In the nightcap, the Senators knocked out nine hits, sparked by Arntson’s 3 for 5 effort. He finished the day at 5 for 9, with three runs scored. Moore and Isaiah Mesa rapped a single and a double, each. Kienan Stief drove in a couple runs. Moore had three doubles and three RBIs on the day.

McMahon started on the hill and went five innings for the win, permitting two hits and one run, while whiffing six batsmen. Byrne relieved the final two scoreless innings, giving up two hits.

Coach Dave Thennis’ Senators improve to 7-4 on the season.
