Independents sweep weekend series

The Helena Independent moved to 27-9 thanks to weekend series sweeps of the Missoula Mavs B (6-1 and 8-4) and the Gallatin Valley Posse B (9-5 and 7-5) in Helena July 2nd and 3rd.

Helena vs Missoula

In the 6-1 game one victory over the Mavs, Helena pounded out 15 hits, with Gabe Dalbec leading the charge, going 3-4 with a double and a walk. Riley Chisholm, Mark Northey, Conor McCarvel (double), and Taylor Carlson (double) also chipped in with 2 hits a piece.

Colter Bauch and Chisholm were stellar on the hill, with Bauch throwing 2 innings with no runs and 1 walk, and Chisholm going the rest of the distance over 5 innings, only allowing 1 run on 2 hits, striking out 3.

In game two, Caeden Suero was 2-2 as he tripled in the first inning and doubled in the seventh inning. Hunter Sickerson added a couple of base hits, and Kaden Martinez had a big 2 RBI double for the Independents in the seventh.

Tayler Carlson handled Missoula Mavs B’s lineup with ease, racking up seven strikeouts. Carlson allowed one earned run on four hits and one walk over 6 2/3 innings. Northey came in to record the final out, and the Independents won 8-4.

Helena vs Gallatin Valley

In game one verses the Gallatin Valley Posse B, the game was tied 3-3 when Helena pushed 3 across to take the lead on a sacrifice fly by Northey and a big 2 RBI single by Carlson. In the sixth, the Independents scored 3 more on a two-run double by Suero and a sacrifice fly by Gage Vermillion, and Helena went on to win 9-5.

Chisholm was perfect at the dish, going 2-2 with 2 walks and 3 runs scored. Sickerson and Carlson each added 2 hits a piece. Nik Jemmings went the distance on the hill for Helena to record the win, giving up 2 earned runs on 10 hits,  3 strikeouts and no walks.

In game two, a key fifth-inning rally gave Helena the lead after trailing 5-4. Northey walked with the bases loaded to force in Suero, and then Jemmings hit a big 2 run single to score Keaton Ralston and Vermillion to take the lead 7-5.

Caleb Shamley got the win for Independents, allowing only one earned run over five innings, striking out four, walking two and surrending six hits. McCarvel shut the door in a 1,2,3 sixth inning to record the save.


The Independents next game will be played at the Gallatin Valley Tournament starting on Friday, July 10. The Tuesday, July 7th game verses the Bitterroot Red Sox B has been cancelled due to a family emergency for one of the coaching staff for Bitterroot.
