Senators win first game in Yakima

Kienan Stief and Payton Pappas posted three runs batted in apiece, leading the Helena Senators to a 9-6 victory over Juanita (Washington) during the first round of the Yakima Tournament on Thursday.

Helena’s big inning was the second, when it pushed across four runs for an early 7-3 lead. The Senators held a 9-4 cushion after five frames, and then held on for the 3-run triumph.

Stief went 3 for 4, while Payton was 2 for 3 with a double. Teammate Nick Wrigg laced a double and a triple, and scored twice.

Koby Griffin started on the bump for the Senators, going five innings, giving up eight hits and four runs to earn the win. Henry Bowers relieved the final two frames, permitting two runs on four hits.

Helena’s defense played errorless ball in the field.

“This was a solid effort from Koby; he didn’t have his good stuff but he sure competed,” said coach Dave Thennis, whose Senators improve to 21-9. “And the top of the (batting) order was really good, very productive this afternoon.”
