Reps edged in State A opener

The Helena Reps were just two innings away from a first-round upset at the Class A Legion State Tournament on Thursday.

Glasgow, however, had other thoughts — and used a two-run single in the top of the eighth to score a come-from-behind, 5-4 win in the tournament opener.

The Reps were on the board first, with Carter Wald scoring in the first inning on an RBI single by Colin Sassano. The top seed in the East, Glasgow tied the game up in the top of the third, but the Helena squad — seeded second out of the Southern District — answered immediately with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Ryan Arntson hit a single in the top of the 7th, and after being moved over by a sacrifice bunt by Wald, scored the go-ahead run on a triple by Sassano.

Glasgow scored one in the sixth and the two teams each put up a run in the seventh, setting the stage for Keil Krumwiede‘s clutch hit. Krumwiede finished 3 for 5 in the win, as did teammate Jason Thibault, who scored the winning run on Krumwiede’s hit.

And on the mound, Krumwiede shone. He pitched 8.0 innings, giving up only five hits, striking out nine. Thibault was awarded the save, pitching a scoreless 9th inning.

Tanner McMahon was tremendous on the mound for the Reps, going seven innings and striking out three. Caleb Jackson was saddled with the loss for Helena. Andrew Rosston pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Helena is still alive in the double-elimination contest, and will take on Vauxhall in an elimination contest at 10 a.m. Friday. These two teams met in mid-June, with Vauxhall taking a narrow, 6-5 win in Helena. Glasgow, meanwhile, moved on to face Kalispell at 7 p.m.
