Reps rout Dickinson 23-1 in Cloninger opener

By Curt Synness, Helena Independent Record

The host Helena Reps were firing on all cylinders in the second game of the annual Class A Legion Cloninger Classic, routing the Dickinson Volunteers 23-1 in a 5-inning run-ruled affair at Kindrick Legion Field. The 8-team tournament runs through Sunday.

Helena burst out of the gates early, ringing up 13 runs in the bottom of the first inning, sparked by Ty McGurran’s bases clearing double with the bases loaded. McGurran finished with two hits and scored three times. The Reps then scored four runs in both the second and third stanzas, and two in their last at bat in the fourth.

“We came out ready to play tonight and put together some good at bats early in the game,” Reps coach Jon Burnett said. “I thought the guys maintained their focus and played pretty well tonight.”

Pretty well may have been an understatement.

Kadyn Craigle led the home team’s 13-hit attack with a 3 for 4 night, including a double and two runs scored. Brady Anderson was 2 for 4 with a triple and four RBIs, while Keanan Horne was 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs.

Reps pitchers Riley Chisholm (two innings) and Zach Spiroff (three innings, two strikeouts) shared the mound work for the Reps, as each allowed two hits. Isaac Gjerde took the loss for Dickinson. Logan Hoff drove in the Volunteers only run in the final frame.

In the tourney opener, the Anaconda A’s came from behind to edge the Class B Helena Independents, 8-5. The Independents put up a 4-spot in the third inning to go up 5-3, before Anaconda scored three in the fourth and two in the sixth frame for a 3-run win.

The A’s were led by Brandon Bisch and Evan Starr, with a pair of RBIs each. Luke Jensen pitched the win.

Chase Nielsen and Peyton Witham (two runs, RBI) poked a couple base knocks apiece for Helena. Hunter Lindgren had a double and an RBI. Nielsen started on the hill and went four innings for the loss.

The rest of the teams in the tournament include the Bozeman Bucks, Lethbridge Miners, Vauxhall Spurs and the Glacier Twins. There will be five games played on Friday and Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m., as the Reps will appear in the last contest at 8 p.m. both nights. Four games will take place Sunday, with the chipper scheduled for 4 p.m.
