Senators earn split in Missoula

he Helena Senators went 1-1 in Missoula against the Mavs in a twinbill, winning the first game 3-1, before dropping the next tilt 5-2.

The Senators now stand at 10-6 on the year after the the pair of well-played Class AA Legion baseball games.

In the opener, Helena pushed across a run in each of the first three innings.

The decider was registered in the second frame, when Jackson Maynard led off with a double and Payton Pappas walked. After Maynard was forced out at third on Carter Pappas’ ground ball, Tanner McMahon reached on a fielder’s choice, before Carter raced home on the ensuing error with what turned out to be the winning run.

The Mavs ruined starting pitcher Keaton Ralston’s shutout with a run in the fourth, but that’s all the Helena hurler would allow in his complete-game six hitter. Ralston struck out four Missoula batsmen and walked only one. Mav’s pitcher Nick Yovetich also allowed six hits in the loss.

Colin Sassano led the Senators at the plate with two hits, including a triple, and drove in a run. Tanner McMahon stroked a double, and Kienan Stief posted an RBI.

In the nightcap, the Senators jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the initial inning. Then the Garden City group tacked on a pair of runs in both the second and fourth frames, while Missoula pitcher Dylan Barkley tossed a seven-hitter for the win.

Stief went 2 for 3, and Sassano produced and RBI.

Tayler Carlson and Brett Jacobs did the mound work for Helena. Jacobs relieved the final 2 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, permitting two hits.

“After a tough loss to Bozeman (Saturday), I was very happy with our play today,” Senators coach Dave Thennis said. “Keaton pitched very well in game one, and we got a few runs early and played solid defense behind him.

“Game 2 was a pitching battle, also, Tayler (Carlsen) and Brett (Jacobs) were very solid. Missoula had a couple key at-bats and that made the difference.”
