The Helena Senators were edged by the Great Falls Chargers, 4-3, in a Class AA Legion baseball game on the road Wednesday.
Great Falls took an early 3-0 lead after three innings, and the score remained that way through six as Chargers starter Justyn Martinko took a shutout into the seventh.
Then the Senators scored one run in each of the next three frames, but came up one short on the scoreboard, when Great Falls pushed across the deciding marker in the bottom of the eighth. Dawson Reiman’s single drove in Keelan Hayworth for the deciding run.
Helena actually outhit the Chargers, 6-4, led by Kienan Stief (double) and Ryan Arntson, with two hits apiece. Payton Pappas (double), Koby Griffin and Ray Moore each posted an RBI.
Tristan Siegers started on the bump for the Senators, and went 3 1/3 innings, while being saddled with the loss. He allowed two hits and three runs, all unearned, with four strikeouts. Reliever Henry Bowers worked the final 4 2/3 frames of one-run ball, surrendering two hits and fanning four.
Martinko went innings and registered the win.
“It was a great pitching duel tonight,” Helena coach Dave Thennis said. “Give credit to Great Falls, they pitched well. But I thought we pitched really well, too.”
