The Helena Senators’ Class AA Legion baseball season came to an end in Missoula on Friday, as the Senators were ousted from the Montana/Alberta State Tournament, losing to Lethbridge 7-3.
Helena went down swinging, however, and actually out-hit the Elks 17-7. But the club stranded 12 men on base.
The Senators drew first blood with a run in the top of the second inning. They went up 2-0 in the top of the third, only to have Lethbridge push across four in the bottom half of the frame for what turned out to be the deciding run.
Kyle Bloor swung the big bat for the Canadians, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Seven Senators turned in multi-hit games, led by Colin Sassano (RBI) and Payton Pappas, who both went 3 for 4. Teammates Ryan Arntson, Danny Burton (triple, RBI), Kienan Stief, Jackson Maynard and Ryan Dorvall swatted two base knocks apiece. Koby Griffin contributed a sac fly RBI.
Shawn Grandmont pitched the win for No. 3 Lethbridge, going 8 1/3 innings, with relief help from Bloor. Grandmont struck out for and walked two.
Helena’s three hurlers included Carter Pappas (2 2/3 innings, five hits, four runs), Henry Bowers (4 2/3 innings, one hit, two runs) and Andrew Rosston (2/3 inning, one hit, one run).
“This team makes me love baseball even more,” said coach Dave Thennis, whose Senators finish the year at 36-25, their best record in several years. “For me, it’s not about the games we played — it’s about the kids and coaches I’m surrounded by.
“The passion, the friendship and the strength of being a part of this team is something I will appreciate forever. What a great group.”
