Senators fall and rise again in one-run games

The Helena Senators split their first two games of the Missoula Memorial Day Tournament, falling 7-6 to the host Missoula Mavericks on a Nick Yovetich walk-off hit-by-pitch on Friday evening before rebounding with a little extra inning magic of their own to defeat the Bozeman Bucks 6-5 in eight innings on Saturday.

On Friday, Colin Sassano was 3-4 with a pair of RBI, Conor McCarvel collected a pair of hits and Ray Moore hit a two-run triple to lead the Senators at the plate. Tayler Carlson went 5.0 innings on the mound, while Carter Pappas pitched the final 1.2 innings to take the loss.

On Saturday, down 5-2 after the fourth inning, RBI hits by Andrew Rosston, Payton Pappas, and Eamonn Byrne tied the score at 5-5 in the fifth.

The game remained tied through the end of regulation thanks to an outstanding pitching performance from Jackson Maynard, going 4.0 scoreless innings and giving up only two hits to get the win.

In the top of the eighth, Byrne drew a walk to lead off the inning, and after being moved over on a grounder by Kellan Elder, the speedy centerfielder stole third base before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Carter Pappas.

Rosston pitched a scoreless 8th inning for the save.

At the plate for the Senators, Kienan Stief and Payton Pappas were each 3-4 with a double, Rosston had a pair of hits, and Elder hit a double.

Coach Dave Thennis’ Senators are now 12-7 on the season. They will face the the Great Falls Chargers on Sunday in Missoula.
