The Helena Senators split their two pool play games at the Keith Sell Tournament on Friday at Kindrick Legion Field.

After downing Gallatin Valley 7-3 in an afternoon game the Senators, who are currently 2-1 in pool play, were edged 9-8 in the bottom of the seventh by Eastside.

The Senators resume play at the eight-team tournament at 8 tonight. The team didn’t know its opponent at press time.

Helena had little trouble in its first game Friday.

The Senators jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings before Gallatin Valley came back with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to make it a game.

Helena’s big inning was the second, when it pushed across three runs for a 5-0 lead. Jackson Maynard reached base when he was plunked, followed by a single by Danny Burton. Then Ryan Dorvall laced a 2-run double to right field, and went to third on an error by the GVO outfielder. Next, Dorvall raced home on Nick Wrigg’s RBI-groundout.

Wrigg – who launched a triple and posted two RBIs – Kienan Stief and Carter Pappas spearheaded the offense, with two hits apiece. Dorvall had the double and two RBIs, while Chase Rook also rapped a two-bagger.

Koby Griffin started and went the first four innings, giving up nine hits and three runs, to earn the win. Henry Bowers relieved in the fifth and pitched three innings of 2-hit shutout ball for the save, striking out four and walking one.

Jacob Willard took the loss for GVO.

Carter Pappas turned in one of the game’s better web gems, when the Senators third-sacker made a beautiful diving back hand stab of a hot 2-bouncer, and then bounced up and threw a seed to second base for a force out of the Outlaw runner.

Eastside 9, Helena 8

The tourney suffered a delay of two hours to start the day at Kindrick Legion Field, due to a sprinkler malfunction that soaked the field during the previous night.

Helena and Eastside were originally scheduled for 8 p.m., but started 45 minutes late, and didn’t finish until 11:15 p.m.

The two teams battled back and forth and entered the bottom of the seventh inning tied at 8-all. Eastside loaded the bases, and then Kody Coop brought home teammate Matt Williams with a walk-off bases on balls.
