Senators split with Bucks

BOZEMAN — The Helena Senators split their Class AA Legion baseball doubleheader with Bozeman on the road Saturday, winning the opener 12-2 in six innings, and dropping the nightcap 7-6.

Jack Shevalier started the first game and worked six innings for the win. The lefthander gave up five hits and struck out five.

The Senators big innings were the third and fourth, when they scored five and three runs, respectively.

Chase Rook posted three RBIs and stroked a double, while Nick Wrigg banged a two-bagger and scored twice. Payton Pappas added a pair of RBIs.

In the nightcap, Helena fell behind 7-0 after three innings. The Senators entered the final frame trailing 7-2, and pushed across four tallies to get within one before the Bucks were able to secure the win.

Helena outhit Bozeman 8-4, led by Wrigg, who had two more base knocks, including a triple, and drove in two runs and again scored twice. Keinan Stief chipped in with two hits, and Danny Burton ripped a triple.

Payton started on the bump and was saddled with the loss. Henry Bowers and Carter Pappas relieved the last 4.2 innings and permitted a combined three hits and one run.

Bozeman’s T. Morris was the winning pitcher.

“The kids played well today,” said coach Dave Thennis, whose Senators stand at 7-3. “Jack (Shevalier) pitched with a strong pace and good command. Offensively we string together some good at bats.

“Game two we started a little lethargic, but we clawed our way back and finished just one hit away from a win.”
