Senators suffer third straight 1-run loss in Missoula tourney

CURT SYNNESS Independent Record

The Helena Senators dropped their third 1-run loss in a row at Missoula’s Memorial Day Class AA Legion baseball tournament, being edged by the Bozeman Bucks 9-8 on Monday.

The two teams entered the sixth inning tied at 8-all, and after holding the Senators scoreless in the top half of the frame, the Bucks won it in their at-bat. D.J. Perdaems led off with a single, and would score three batters later on Helena’s second error of the inning. The game was stopped due to the time limit.

The setback drops coach Dave Thennis’ Senators to 9-9 on the year.

“Interesting weekend to say the least. We need to improve some aspects but, really, tons of positives,” Thennis said.

Helena finished with four errors in the game, as six of Bozeman’s runs were unearned.

After a scoreless 1 1/2 innings, Bozeman erupted for six runs in the bottom of the second. The Senators had a pair of 4-run frames, in the third and fifth innings, to get to even heading into the sixth.

The Bucks outhit Helena 12-9, led by Perdaems at 3 for 4, with a double and driving in two runs, and Bennett Hostetler at 2-4, with a triple and two RBIs.

Three Senators posted two singles apiece; Ryan Arntson, Colin Sassano and Kienan Stief. Sassano and Danny Burton had a pair of RBIs each.

Bozeman used four pitchers, with Alex Ekstrom collecting the win. Four hurlers also shared Helena’s mound work – Payton Pappas, Henry Bowers, Tristan Siegers and Carter Pappas – with Pappas being hung with the loss.
