Bowers walk-off helps Senators split with Butte

By the Helena Independent Record

The Helena Senators split a Class AA Legion doubleheader with Butte on Saturday, with Henry Bowers’ walk-off single in the eighth inning vaulting the hosts to victory in the opener.

Helena won the first contest at Kindrick Legion Field 4-3, before dropping the nightcap 23-8 in five innings.

Both teams scored a pair of runs in the first frame of the lid-lifter, and the game was at 3s after three. The game remained tied and went into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Payton Pappas led off with a walk, and was sacrificed to second by Carter Pappas. One out later, Bowers ripped a line drive single to left field, while Pappas raced home with the winning run.

Jack Sheavlier started on the mound for the hosts and worked two innings, giving up three runs, two of which were earned. He was relieved by Kenny Wilson, who shut out the Miners the rest of way. Wilson collected the win, surrendering just two hits in six innings, with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Trey Berger, the Mining City’s third pitcher, sustained the loss.

Helena outhit its counterparts 9-5, led by Kienan Stief, with two hits, a double and a pair of RBIs, and Koby Griffin’s two singles.

The second game was all Butte, as the Miners scored 12 runs in the first inning, one in the second, three in the fourth and seven more in the fifth. The visitors banged out 15 hits, led by Trey Hoagland, Zach Hart, Nate LeProwse and Dylan McDonald. Renzy Doherty earned the win, while Payton Pappas was the losing pitcher.

Pacing the Senators hitting were Bowers with two hits, Wilson with a couple RBIs, and Nick Wrigg, with a double.

“Game 1 we had a solid performance from Kenny Wilson in relief … took us a while to score until that clutch hit from Henry,” said coach Dave Thennis, whose Senators improve to 4-1 on the young season. “Game 2 boils down to Butte really hitting the ball.”
