The Helena Senators went 1-1 over the weekend at the Memorial Day Weekend AA Legion baseball tournament in Missoula, losing to Coeur d’Alene 10-2 on Saturday, and then posting a 2-1 victory over Belgrade on Sunday.
In the loss to Couer d’Alene, Helena was outhit 12-4, with Riley Pickens sustaining the pitching loss.
The Lumbermen scored one run in the first inning, two runs in the third and fifth innings, and six runs in the sixth frame. The Senators tallied once in the first and once in the third stanza, before being shut out the rest of the way.
Koby Griffin had two hits and two RBIs for Helena, while teammate Payton Pappas stroked a double.
Against Belgrade, with Nick Wrigg and Danny Burton back in the lineup after competing at the State AA Track Meet in Kalispell, the Senators use some “Billy Ball” to beat the Bandits.
The score was knotted at 1-all, when Reilly Leary led off the bottom of the third with a walk. He then stole second base, advanced to third on a groundout by Payton, and raced home for the deciding run on Wrigg’s RBI single.
Griffin started on the hill and twirled six innings of 1-run ball, scattering eight hits, striking out four and walking only one for the win. Burton came on in relief in the seventh and closed the door for the save. Wrigg finished with two hits and a pair of RBIs.
Coach Dave Thennis’ Senators now stand at 12-6 on the year.
