Helena Reps Coach Jon Burnett’s philosophy for winning conference games in the Class A Southern District has typically centered around producing a high volume of offense.
“Everybody hits in this conference – we just have to outscore teams,” said Burnett. “Generally speaking, if we can get to about 8 runs a game, we’ll get a win.”
And year after year, Burnett’s teams have consistently been offensive juggernauts, with their pitching giving them just enough to yield gaudy winning records. But four games into the 2017 conference season, it’s Helena’s pitching staff that has really produced for Burnett.
After complete game performances from Ryan Barrett and Hunter Sickerson in Anaconda on Sunday, Riley Chisholm and Walter Evans took the mound to dominate Gallatin Valley in a 7-2 and 3-0 sweep of the Outlaws.
Chisholm went 6 2/3 for Helena in game one, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out four. Matt Krieger threw one pitch to record the final out, a fly ball to caught by left fielder Ty McGurran.
Offensively for the Reps, Keanan Horne (double, 2 RBI) and Kadyn Craigle (double, RBI) had multi-hit games, while Grady Koenig reached base three times with a hit and pair of walks.
Game two was all about the dominance of Evans, shutting down GVO on a two-hit, complete game performance. The first-year Rep was masterful on the mound, striking out four and walking none.
Scoreless through four and a half innings, Helena took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a McGurran single up the middle, scoring Brady Anderson. That was all the offense Evans needed on the night, despite Helena tacking on two more in the sixth inning. McGurran led the way for the Reps in game two with a pair of hits.
The pair of wins moves Helena to 4-0 in the conference and 12-1 overall. The Reps will next head to Missoula for the Mavs’ Memorial Day Weekend tournament.
