By the Helena IR |

Sparked by Kienan Steif’s four hits and three RBIs, the Helena Senators bumped off the Missoula Mavericks on Friday, 7-5. The Class AA win at Kindrick Legion Field improves the Senators’ conference record to 5-6, while Missoula slips to 7-4.

Helena jumped out to a 2-0, first-inning lead, and extended the cushion to 6-2 after a four-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth frame. The Senators tacked on an insurance tally in the seventh and held on for the two-run victory.

The fifth-inning fireworks included a two-run single by Stief; singles by Danny Burton, Payton Pappas and Henry Bowers; and an RBI double by Jackson Thennis.

Helena outhit the visitors 13-12, led by Stief, and Burton, Koby Griffin (double) and Henry Bowers, with two hits apiece. Nick Wrigg laced a triple, extending his team record to 12.

Jakob Bierig paced the Garden City crew with a double, single and two RBIs.

Ryan Dorvall started on the hill for the home team, going six innings and scattering 10 hits for the win. Carter Pappas performed the final three innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits, for the save.

Nick Yovetich was hung with the loss.

“The kids played well tonight. We threw the ball in the zone and played steady defense,” said Sens coach Dave Thennis, whose club improves to 31-18 on the season.

The Senators close out a five-game homestand on Saturday, hosting Missoula in a game set to start at 1 p.m. at Kindrick Legion Field.

NOTE: Former Senators player Tanner Swanby will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the contest with the Mavs.
