Odd year magic? Senators hope so in 2025

HELENA — Practice, for a Helena Senators team seeking a sixth-straight Class AA state championship game appearance, began Sunday under electric blue skies at Kindrick Legion Field.

The team that participated in situational fielding and hitting drills for roughly two hours isn’t the same one that’ll compete during a 24-game conference schedule – the product of five super-seniors slated to return following collegiate spring semesters or seasons abroad.

“We’ve got a new group of kids to break in,” Senators head coach Jon Burnett said. “With us missing five guys early on, it’ll be a great opportunity to kinda have them prove themselves and get their first taste of AA baseball…

“See who can step up and play at this level.”

Helena missed a golden opportunity to capture back-to-back state crowns in 2024, losing twice on Championship Sunday on its home field to the Missoula Mavericks. Opening Day, April 19, is a rematch of that title game, the first countable contests in what the Senators hope is a third-straight magical odd-numbered calendar year.
